The piano has been drinking again

Cool...I found part of the missing entry from December 7. It is the review of the Utah Symphony. I republish it here as well as in the archives:

Well last night Candace, Lydia, and I went to the Utah Symphony. Now in general I am all down with going to see well-played music with the symphony, but last night something was off. It could have been the cheap merlot we found at the wine store ($2.98 a bottle and it didn't taste like gasoline!) or it could have been the food at Cafe Trang, but I really suspect it was the terrible performance the symphony gave. Granted it is difficult to tell when an orchestra royally fucks something up, but it started with the Haydn, worked through the disappointing Mendelsohn Violin Concerto, and clanked to a halt with Schuman's third. Now I've admired Joseph Silverstein for a long time, and I think he is one of the best chamber violinists I've ever heard, but I think one has to lay it all on him. He only showed a little vigor in the Mendelsohn, but totally fucked with the soloist, in that he didn't keep the orchestra with him. I felt badly for the soloist, since he was technically there, but artistically hugely flat. The Mendelsohn is a piece you have to take a big bite out of. He was eating it like a lady finger. Too bad. In any case, I haven't seen the symphony since last year, so I hope this is just a one-time fluke coinciding with a return of the retired Silverstein.

you were born in this nuthouse?

Watched the Princess and the Warrior a German film by Tom Tykwer last night in lieu of doing laundry or anything else productive. I started it once and immediately fell asleep (not a good sign for a movie, but it was understandable since it was subtitled.) When I woke up I was completely lost, so I started it over again and found it to be a rather compelling exploration of shut-down lives, a topic I can readily relate to. I was happy that it wasn't a pretentious movie, and it had some amazing camera work and tableau scenes.

I have done no Christmas shopping. I need to do laundry. I need to sort out my room. I need to grocery shop.

I think I will go make something out of tape.

Como te llamas?

Ok so the whole cast thing was inspired by thoughts of stupid sitscoms, but as now I've gotten to thinking that it would be a hell of a lot cooler to be one of those Univision telenovellas. I will have to give everyone hispanic names now. I need some of those telenovella cuties to wander through my scenes.

Through a glass darkly

The cast page from yesterday inspired me to to this. Unless you have a broadband connection, I would suggest avoiding downloading it. It really isn't worth the 2 or 3 hours it will take you to download otherwise.

Candace is going up to Idaho. I called her and sent a text message but no response. Hmm. I am supposed to go to an English Department gathering tonight, but I really don't feel like it. I think all I want to do is laundry. I'm not kidding.

pricks

OK so some freak out there has been calling my cell phone for the last little while with obscure taped messages. The caller ID is blocked, of course, so I can't do anything. I'll check with AT&T and see what is up with what.

To kill time while I wait for Candace I've made this. Enjoy.

Mohair

Looky here: http://gardnecl.home.comcast.net/ . I am particularly proud of the tape. Ah hangovers. Jen, Jeff's girl, came back into town last night and we had a mini-party.

Candace and I are going to see a movie, I hope. She leaves for Idaho tomorrow. I decided not to go. She is cool with it. What a great woman.

Hobo knife

So yesterday was the last day of the WC. Ah sweet relief. Actually I am sure there are a bunch of panicky students coming up to the door. It is pointless to work with them, you see, simply because it is too late. Most come in and say "my paper is due in 30 minutes." You can see how that would go. I finally decided just to pull work during test week a few semesters ago.

So anyway it is somewhat a free day for me--I just need to go in and finish up a few things and start a couple of other things. I can afford to stay up to all hours and burn CDs with buddies. I collected quite a stack. No wait a minute, I didn't burn any CD's at all. Hear that R*I*A*A*?
