Some other day

In the course of 30 minutes yesterday I think we made up for having no rain for 2 months. I've lived here a long time and I've never seen it rain so hard. I was running from 3rd Avenue to my house, which takes about 15 seconds and was thoroughly soaked by the time I got inside. The street was like a river. The water was warm. It is getting to the best part of the summer, now. It is not as hot and we actually get some great gully washers.

As a kid I never understood the cultural problem with "rainy days." Living in the desert you long for them.

Dancing Fool

(gratis Carolus)

I am contemplating The Flaming Lips' latest Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. I am really not sure why certain parts of it remind me of Yes' Close to the Edge, other than the echoed vocals. They have had the echoed vocals before, of course, so something else must be causing it. Over all its a solid, mellow album.

Adventure

When my brother and my were much younger we had the wanderlust. At the end of the school term we would pile our junk into his rust bucket Courier pickup and hit the road. We were intense drivers, stopping only when absolutely necessary, or for odd things we found on the road. On one trip to the Northern California coast, we spent hours of expectation climbing over coastal hill after coastal hill. Each time we reached a crest it was a let down--just more thick forest and nary a sign of the mighty Pacific. We got on each other's nerves then. We picked on little things. I mentioned his nervous nail biting; he made fun of my anxious laugh. All that tension melted away when we rounded the last bend in the road and there it was, shimmering all sunset red in front of us. We parked and watched the glory fade on top of a rocky cliff. We were quiet later while making camp, relieved that it was all over and we had reached it--reached what we had driven so hard and so long for, amazed that unlike so many things anticipated, we were not even slightly disappointed..
